Specialist Curriculum Areas

Visual Arts

At Wheelers Hill Primary School the students in all classes are immersed in regular structured Visual Art sessions. Creativity is the ability to think outside the square, which is paramount in achieving success in all walks of life.

The essential components of the Visual Arts Program are:

  •      Creating and making p-6
  •      Exploring and responding 3-6

Sequential skill development is included in the seven main areas of the Art Program – drawing, painting, clay modelling, construction, collage, threads and textiles, and printmaking.

These areas are taken individually or combined, with the students working at a level appropriate to their needs.

The students use many of these skills to create their masterpieces, which are displayed around the school.

Through all of these experiences, the students develop skills and techniques, problem solving, creative thinking, aesthetic awareness, personal learning and best of all…….confidence in risk taking and pride in themselves.

An Art club operates after school once a week for students who wish to take advantage of this optional extra.

Performing Arts

The music program at Wheelers Hill Primary School embraces composition, creativity, participation, technology and fun. The main goal is to foster in all students the belief that their compositions are worthwhile. All kids are musical.

Classroom Music

Every student participates in a generalist music class once a week. A range of concepts and presentation styles are covered to allow for as many different learning styles as possible. These include loops based composition, traditional notation, appreciation of a variety of musical styles as well as the basics of pitch, rhythm texture and melody. In their generalist class lots of work has been done in singing and Kodaly.

Ensembles

Children are encouraged to participate in the ensemble that we provide. This uses xylophones, glockenspiels, djembe drums, marimbas and hand percussion. We also run a choir for students in Grades 2-6.  As much opportunity as possible is provided for these ensembles to perform within the school at music assemblies, at the school concerts and outside the school.

 Concerts

Every year the students at Wheelers Hill Primary School are involved in a whole school performance.  This provides students with the opportunity to perform as part of a grade/ year level, audition for lead roles, learn dance routines, organise their own costume and experience the joy of performing in front of a large audience. Last year our theme was titled ‘Hooked On Classics’ and was based upon famous television shows from The Mickey Mouse Club to Happy Days.
