Welcome to our Preps

Welcome to Wheelers Hill Primary School. We look forward to working with you and your family to ensure each of your children receives the best education we can provide.

Education involves a partnership between the school and the home. Responsibility for the child’s learning is shared between the school and the home. We have parent teacher interviews during the year to inform you of your child’s progress. Of course parents are most welcome to contact teachers at a mutually agreeable time to discuss any issues of concern.

Parents are always welcome in the school and parent participation is actively encouraged in all aspects of school life. Parents may assist in classroom programs such as daily reading, computer technology, P.M.P. (Perceptual Motor Program), excursions and camps. Parents can participate in school life by being involved in the School Council, Canteen, Uniform Shop and various other activities.

Your child will learn useful concepts, skills, understanding and attitudes in the following areas of the curriculum:

  • Science
  • Technology

Above all, your child will learn:
  • to be an active learner
  • to make an honest attempt
  • that making a mistake is nothing to be frightened of, but is one way in which we learn

Prep Transition

The Prep Transition Program is designed to help children with the challenges and adjustments they need to make as they move into the first year of their schooling. Any pre-school child who will be beginning school the next year is welcome to attend Prep Activity days. They are held during Term 2 and allow the children to join in classroom activities with the current Preps. While the children are busy their parents are welcome to stay and have morning tea and a chat to some of our current parents from the school. Tours of the school are offered during Terms 2 and 3 or by appointment. During Term 4 all children who are enrolled are invited to attend two Orientation mornings where they are introduced to school routines. On the second visit they meet their grade 6 “buddy” who will be invaluable in helping them in their first few weeks at school. An information session for parents is held in December to explain school procedures for early Term 1 and answer any questions parents may have.

Your Child’s First Day

Please ensure that your child has a good night’s sleep on the night before they come to school. Arrive at school by 9:25am.

Wait outside until greeted by the Prep Teachers. Class lists will be placed near the entrances to the Junior School breezeway.

Your child needs to be wearing correct school uniform and have a school bag or other bag that is large enough to hold everything your child needs and is also easy for your child to pack and unpack themself.

Your child needs to bring
  • A sunsmart hat (wide brimmed or legionnaires)
  • Sunscreen (and know how to apply it)
  • A small playlunch, lunch and drink
  • An art smock
  • A library bag
  • A box of tissues (200 size)
  • A colouring book (for wet days)
Ensure all items, which are brought to school, are clearly named. When you have brought your child inside please say good-bye HAPPILY and leave the building as quickly as possible. Morning tea will be provided in the community room so please stay for a while and have a chat. At the end of the day, arrive promptly at 12:45pm and again wait outside until greeted by one of the staff members. Proceed to your child’s class and collect your child. When you get home remember that your child may be tired and will talk to you about their school day when they are ready.

Prep Buddies

‘Buddy’ Program

Buddies are an important part of our Prep Transition Program. All children enrolled in Preps at the school are paired with a grade 6 “buddy”. They meet their “buddy” on orientation day and spend some time with them doing some fun activities. When they begin school they meet their buddies in the special play area set aside for Preps and for the first few weeks their “buddy “ helps to keep an eye on them. During the year some activities are organised for the Preps and their “buddies” to do together.
