Features of our Level 2 Program

The Early Years Literacy Program,

  • Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening, occur daily in all classrooms through the Literacy block.
  • The Early Years Literacy Coordinator organises a comprehensive selection of resources, assists in professional development of teachers, and administers a range of assessment procedures.
  • Guided Reading sessions conducted by the class teacher, allow for students to progress at their own level, while understanding and comprehension of texts remain a priority.
  • Consolidation in Reading occurs consistently as individual students select and read from a well organised Take-Home Book System.
  • A team of enthusiastic parents contribute to the daily functioning and success of the Take-Home Book System.
  • Parents who are Trained Classroom Helpers are timetabled to assist in classrooms with a range of activities.
  • Students in Grade 1 requiring additional assistance in Reading and Writing may participate in the Reading Recovery Program which is administered by the trained Reading Recovery Teacher.

The Mathematics Program has a “hands-on” skill emphasis focus utilising a broad range of resources and activities to ensure that learning is meaningful and to allow for thorough understanding of concepts.

Thinking Skills and Problem-solving activities are essential features of most areas of curriculum.

Integrated Studies Units based on the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) cover an interesting and stimulating selection of topics which rotate during a two year cycle. These units feature relevant excursions and in-school activities and may include:

  • Visit to Healesville Sanctuary
  • Rock-pooling at Ricketts Point
  • Monash Science Weather Study

Year 1students participate in a “Health Hustle” which is an enjoyable, vigorous, physical program developing fitness and coordination.

Homework :
Year 2 students participate in Homework activities which involve activity-based tasks, usually related to units of study. Year 1 students may have simple homework such as learning the most frequently used words and daily reading.
